Erdogan rules out approval of Sweden’s NATO membership without extradition of PKK fighters

Turkey believes that joining the alliance of countries supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party will make it unsafe. Erdogan also rebuked NATO for disrespecting Ankara

Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Swedish representatives should not bother negotiating with Turkey about the Kingdom's entry into NATO, as it will not approve it without the extradition of members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization in Ankara. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Milliyet reports.

“They are going to arrive on Monday. Let them not trouble themselves, our attitude is obvious. Terrorist organizations are still marching in Sweden, — Erdogan explained.

The Turkish leader found the simultaneous support of the kingdom of Kurdish formations and requests to Turkey to support his membership in NATO inconsistent.

“We asked Sweden to extradite 30 terrorists, they said they would not extradite them. Terrorists are not extradited, but they ask us to accept them into NATO, — he explained (quoted from Hurriyet). According to Erdogan, Sweden's accession to the alliance, given the situation with the PKK, will make it unsafe.

The Turkish President also rebuked the alliance for disrespecting Ankara's concerns, noting that some other members are treated differently there.

Earlier, Erdogan also accused Sweden and Finland of supporting sanctions against Turkey.

On the eve of Bloomberg, it was reported that Ankara is asking for approval of the entry of these countries into the North Atlantic Alliance, the return of Turkey to the training program for pilots of American F-35 fighters and the removal of sanctions from it for the purchase of the S-400 anti-aircraft complex from Russia. Stockholm and Helsinki should also publicly denounce the Kurdish formations and recognize the PKK as a terrorist organization.

The Turkish edition of Sabah listed ten demands from Ankara. Among other things, she demands from the Finnish and Swedish authorities not to admit members of the PKK to parliaments and avoid contacts with them, to stop disinformation from the followers of the preacher Fethullah Gülen (their organization FETO is also recognized as a terrorist organization in Turkey) and to block the bank accounts of these structures.

On May 18, Sweden and Finland filed formal applications to join NATO. Now they will be considered by the Council of the North Atlantic Alliance, then it must be ratified by the parliaments of all 30 members.

The leader of the European People's Party, the largest faction of the European Parliament, Manfred Weber noted that any member of the alliance who will prevent these countries from joining, will be isolated within the bloc.

As stated in the Italian Foreign Ministry, the decision was made “in agreement with the partners.” and for “national security reasons.” At the time, the Russian Foreign Ministry promised “an appropriate response.”

The country's ambassador, Pierre Levy, “was strongly protested against the provocative and unsubstantiated decision.” France to declare 41 employees of Russian diplomatic institutions persona non grata.

Foreign Ministry announces expulsion of 27 Spanish diplomats

As a response, Russia declared 27 employees of the Spanish embassy and consulate general persona non grata. Earlier today, the Foreign Ministry decided to expel 58 French and Italian diplomats

The building of the Spanish Embassy in Moscow

The Russian authorities have declared 27 employees of the Spanish Embassy in Moscow and the Spanish Consulate General in St. Petersburg persona non grata, the Foreign Ministry reports. They will have to leave Russia within seven days.

This was a response to the expulsion of 27 Russian diplomats from Spain. Earlier Wednesday, Spanish Ambassador to Moscow Marcos Gomez Martinez was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and protested. “It is emphasized that this unfriendly step will have a negative impact on Russian-Spanish relations,” — added in the ministry.

Madrid decided to expel the Russian diplomatic mission in early April, the authorities explained this by the fact that the diplomats “pose a threat to the interests and security” Spain. According to Russian Ambassador Yuri Korchagin, he was told that the activities of the embassy employees being expelled were “not compatible with diplomatic work.” According to the Ambassador, no explanation or evidence was provided to him.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said in early May that Korchagin had “almost no” contact with the department. At the same time, he stressed that Madrid does not intend to expel the ambassador. The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Moscow regards this remark as “an unethical attempt to put pressure on the head of the Russian diplomatic mission.”

Earlier on May 18, Russia declared 24 Italian diplomats and 34 members of the French diplomatic mission persona non grata. This step was also a response to the actions of Rome and Paris.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, many European countries declared employees of Russian diplomatic missions persona non grata, including Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Belgium, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and others.

The European Commission has presented a new plan to phase out energy from Russia

The Commission identified three principles for accelerating the phase-out of Russian oil and gas: reducing energy consumption, finding new suppliers and accelerating the transition to renewable energy

The process of EU phase-out of Russian fossil energy sources will be based on three principles: it is saving energy, accelerating the transition to renewable sources and diversifying supplies, said the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Von der Leyen stressed that the process is progressing well in presenting the finalized exit plan. She recalled that the European Union refused coal from Russia, and Russian gas supplies in 2022 began to occupy 26% in the structure of EU consumption— against 40% in 2021.

However, the reduction of the EU's dependence on Russian hydrocarbons must be accelerated. This can be done at three levels, von der Leyen explained.

  • Energy savings for consumers. The head of the European Commission called it the fastest and cheapest way to respond to the current energy crisis.
  • Replacing supplies from Russia with gas from other reliable suppliers.
  • Accelerate the transition to clean renewable energy. At this level, the EC proposes to increase the share of renewable energy in the total composition of its sources from 40 to 45%.

All this will require impressive funding, said von der Leyen. The EU will need €300 billion for these purposes

The EC presented the first version of the strategy for the transition to other energy sources in early March. It said that Europeans should strive to diversify suppliers by increasing imports of LNG and pipeline gas from other sources, increase production and imports of biomethane and fuel hydrogen, and accelerate the reduction in the use of fossil fuels for heating.

Turchak opposed Mironov’s idea to cancel the autumn elections

Turchak did not see the possibility of weakening Russia due to political competition in the elections. The day before, the leader of the Right Russians warned about this, who also proposed to send money instead of election campaigns to support the army

Andrey Turchak

«United Russia» I do not agree with the proposal not to hold elections on the Single Voting Day in September, Andriy Turchak, Secretary of the Party General Council, said on his Telegram channel. So he commented on the initiative of the head of the faction «Fair Russia— For the truth” Sergei Mironov.

“United Russia” strongly disagree with this. First, the source of power in Russia is the people. It is written in our Constitution. And this is the case when it is not just the letter, but the spirit of the law. It is impossible to deprive people of this right under any circumstances,»,— Turchak said.

He did not agree with the opinion that political competition weakens the country, noting that it makes it stronger. As Turchak pointed out, “all parties agree on the meaning and justification of the special military operation.” and the election campaign cannot shake that consensus.

According to Turchak, “United Russia” is preparing for the preliminary voting procedure, it will begin on May 23.

The day before, Mironov, speaking in the State Duma, proposed to refuse to hold elections in the fall. In his opinion, funds for holding election campaigns should be directed to support the army or to territories taken under control.

“After all, today we must be all as one. Today, all of us in this hall support the president. And in the elections we will have to fight with each other, talk about our contradictions, about what we do not agree with. I think that it is absolutely not the time and place to deal with elections where political parties will compete, — Mironov explained. He also proposed to elect the heads of regions through legislative assemblies, as is the case in Adygea.

In March, Kommersant wrote about the proposal of several governors to cancel direct elections due to the economic situation against the backdrop of a special operation. with reference to sources in the presidential administration. At the end of April, RBC sources familiar with the discussion of the issue said that the likelihood of direct gubernatorial elections being canceled was high, and the regions could switch to elections through legislative assemblies.

In addition, they allowed the postponement of elections to legislative assemblies and city dumas for 2023 or 2024, when presidential elections are scheduled in Russia.

President Vladimir Putin will make the final decision on changing the format. As expected, he could speak about this at a meeting of legislators in St. Petersburg on April 27, but this topic was not raised. The day before, the press secretary of the head of state, Dmitry Peskov, said that so far no decisions had been made to postpone the elections.

A single voting day should be held in Russia on September 11th. Then 15 heads of regions, as well as deputies of six legislative bodies of the country's constituent entities, will be elected.

Experts warn of a “trap” for the dollar until the end of May

The dollar exchange rate depends on the behavior of the euro, analysts say.

Evgeny Mironyuk, an expert on the stock market at BCS Mir Investments, in an interview with the media, mentioned the “pitfalls” that the dollar will have to face before the end of May.

Recall that recently the dollar has already reached record highs over the past twenty years, updating highs against other currencies. If some experts believe that the peak of inflation has already been passed, others are sure that not everything is over yet.

Thus, in April the inflation rate was 0.3%, and in March 1.2%, but prices are still continue to grow.

Mironyuk told “Prime”that according to the statement of the head of the Fed (analogous to the Central Bank in the United States) Jerome Powell, rates will increase by 0.5% for each of the federal funds, which will lead to a decrease in the difference in rates with the economies of developing countries and increase compared to the developed ones.

The head of the Fed said that he would not hesitate to support raising the rate above the “neutral” level.

The US also points to the increased attractiveness of the dollar for the so-called carry trade rates, when an investor borrows in one currency at a lower rate and invests in another at a higher rate.

The American expert is sure that the fall of the euro is to blame for the weakness of the dollar.

As Mironyuk clarifies, on May 12, the euro reached 1.05 per 1 dollar, after which there was “a breakdown into a figure” – the quote was 1.0357, which means a fall of the euro by 0.3%.

It is highly likely that the euro will continue to fall in the short term.

According to Mironyuk, before the end of the month, a strong the movement of the EUR/USD pair down and the growth of the dollar index is small. Weak US sales of retail and durable goods, as well as GDP figures in the first quarter, may play into the hands of the dollar.

The analyst believes that the targets “bulls”(securities traders who earn on the growth of assets in price) will be 1.057 and 1.062 euros for 1 dollar.

If the fall of the euro continues, then the dollar to euro exchange rate will be about 1.034-1.055 euros per one American monetary unit. As for the currency index, the dollar will not exceed the frame of 103.4-105 points.

Earlier, Topnews wrote that the expert called the real value of the dollar.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 to “denazify” and “demilitarization” countries. Then the authorities stated that there was no talk of occupying the territory of Ukraine or annexing part of it to Russia.

On May 11, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the issue of including the Kherson region into Russia should be decided by the inhabitants of this region of Ukraine.

Welt reported that Kuleba “lost his temper” in a conversation with the Minister of Germany

The newspaper reported on a difficult conversation between the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the head of the German Defense Ministry on the supply of Gepard tanks. Kuleba demanded an honest answer on this issue. Earlier it was reported that Germany had no ammunition for tanks

Dmitry Kuleba

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba “lost his temper” during a discussion with German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht on the supply of Cheetah tanks, writes Welt.

Otherwise, he suggested that the minister recognize that the topic was removed from discussion and that Berlin was “focused on a new project.” Sources in Kyiv called the conversation difficult, Kuleba reproached Lambrecht for announcing the supplies, knowing that there were no ammunition.

In Ukrainian government circles, the publication was told that the German minister in during the conversation, she only promised that the government would continue to look for ammunition for the Cheetahs.

Berlin has officially announced its readiness to deliver 50 Cheetahs to Kyiv. at the end of April, the information was voiced by Lambrecht at the US Air Force Base in Ramstein. On April 28, the Bundestag approved the supply of heavy weapons to Kyiv. However, in early May, Welt wrote that the delivery process was delayed due to the lack of necessary ammunition. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz clarified earlier this week that the tanks can't just be picked up, they “have to be ready.”

Anti-aircraft self-propelled gun “Gepard” (air defense tank “Gepard”) was developed in 1963 on the basis of the main German tank “Leopard-1”. In 1973, the car was put into service and entered mass production.

"Gepard" armed with two 35-mm cannons with an effective firing range of 5.5 thousand meters. Blocks of smoke grenade launchers are also installed on both sides of the tower. In total, about 570 ZSU of this type were produced.

The Kremlin decided to keep the direct election of governors

The authorities will not postpone the Single Election Day in September, it was also decided to leave direct elections of governors. Keeping the elections unchanged demonstrates the “normality of the situation,” RBC sources say ” alt=”The Kremlin decided to keep the direct election of governors” />

Invariable terms and format

The Kremlin will not postpone the Single Election Day scheduled for September , and retain direct gubernatorial elections.

On Wednesday, May 18, the Secretary of the United Russia General Council announced on his Telegram channel the need to hold the EDG on time. Andrew Turchak. “Firstly, the source of power in Russia is the people. It is written in our Constitution. <…> It is impossible to deprive people of this right under any circumstances,»,— he wrote. Secondly, according to Turchak, “political competition does not weaken the country, but, on the contrary, makes it stronger.” meaning and justification of the NWO [special military operation]— all parties agree. The election campaign can hardly shake this consensus.

The secretary of the general council of the ruling party said that United Russia ready for the elections: “And they must take place.”

Turchak's statement was made in response to the proposal of the leader of the Just Russia— For the truth” Sergei Mironov to postpone the current autumn campaigns “until the goals of the special military operation are fulfilled.” The politician spoke with the idea of transferring several times, the last time such a statement was made on May 17 at a meeting of the State Duma.

The leader of the SZRP motivated his initiative by the fact that today all parliamentary parties support the president, while in the elections they will have to fight with each other, talk about contradictions and about what they disagree with. “I think that it is absolutely not the time and place to engage in elections where political parties will compete. Let's better send money to our army, to the liberated territories, & mdash; the politician said. At the same time, the heads of the regions, according to him, could be elected through legislative assemblies.

Three sources close to the presidential administration confirmed to RBC that a decision had been made that the elections would indeed be held on time, and the EDG would not be postponed will.

According to the federal official and interlocutors close to the Kremlin, direct elections will have to be preserved in all regions where such a format is envisaged, and no changes not planned.

On the Single Election Day on September 11, direct elections of governors are planned in 14 subjects. In another — Adygea— the election of the head of the republic through the legislative assembly is envisaged.

In addition, elections to the legislative assemblies of six regions and 11 city dumas are planned.

Demonstration of “normality”

According to two sources close to the presidential administration, the decision not to change anything was made because opinion polls show a high rating of the president, heads of regions and United Russia. “No one is in danger, so there is no need [to change anything],” — explains one of the interlocutors of RBC. Preservation of elections within the time limits provided for by law, and as for the gubernatorial & mdash; as before— demonstrates the “normality of the situation,” he says. “The absence of elections or some change in their model would indicate that something extraordinary is happening in the country,” — adds the second interlocutor of RBC.

One of the main arguments of supporters of postponing elections or canceling direct gubernatorial campaigns was that closer to autumn, citizens could fully feel the effect of sanctions, which could also affect the ratings of power, RBC wrote earlier.

The fact that the Kremlin is discussing the possibility of postponing elections to legislative assemblies and city dumas for 2023 or 2024, as well as the abolition of direct gubernatorial campaigns, RBC reported on April 26. It was assumed that the possibility of changes related to the elections, President Vladimir Putin could discuss at a meeting with the Council of Legislators on April 27. However, nothing was said at the event.

Later, a source familiar with the preparation of the Council of Legislators told RBC that, according to the scenario, one of the senators or deputies was supposed to come up with a proposal for changes, and Putin, as expected will express his opinion on this matter. Why this did not happen, the interlocutor of RBC found it difficult to answer.

The preservation of direct gubernatorial elections and the rejection of the idea of canceling or postponing campaigns as such are designed to stabilize the domestic political situation, political analyst Rostislav Turovsky believes. According to him, the reason for such a decision may also be the desire to show that there are no drastic changes— all electoral procedures, including the United Russia primaries, remain in effect.

“To cancel the elections, serious arguments would be required, apparently, they did not find it. At the same time, the results do not cause much concern— the authorities intend to use them in the logic of a patriotic upsurge. Such a scenario will play into the hands precisely and only of United Russia, which seeks to take advantage of this opportunity, — said the expert. It will be difficult for other parties to find an opposition agenda that suits them, he added.

The cancellation of the gubernatorial elections would look like an acknowledgment that not everything is going according to plan on the Ukrainian issue, despite the fact that the official position is to the contrary, the head of the Petersburg Politics Foundation believes. Mikhail Vinogradov. “The same hypothetical forecasts about possible turbulence in the future require rather strengthening the political subjectivity of governors so that they have the motivation to resolve emerging crises, and not redirect problems to Moscow” elections for such subjectivity are not superfluous at all,— he noted.

In addition, the process of control over the composition of the participants in the elections and the counting of votes was recognized as “sufficiently manageable”, which allows minimizing the risks for candidates from the authorities, the expert notes.

” United Russia» opposed the postponement of the elections, because it is the party in power, and the authorities decided that there should be elections, says Vitaly Ivanov, an expert on regional politics. As for the intention to keep direct elections of governors, then, according to him, the authorities calculated the risks and came to the conclusion that they are either minimal or none at all.

Nebenzya rejected the discussion of the export of fertilizers in exchange for Ukrainian grain

UN Secretary General Guterres did discuss with the Russian authorities the resumption of exports of fertilizers, but not in the context of the issue of the withdrawal of ships with grain from Ukrainian ports, Nebenzia said

UN Secretary General António Guterres, during a visit to Moscow at the end of April, discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov the lifting of restrictions on the export of Russian potash fertilizers, but without reference to the issue of exporting grain from Ukrainian ports. Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, told journalists about this.

According to Nebenzya, publications in the media about this— “free interpretation”. “The issue of trading fertilizers for the export of grains is not so worth it. This question was indeed raised by Guterres, but not in terms of exchanging one for the other, — he emphasized (quote from TASS).

There are “no conditions” between the export of fertilizers and grain, the permanent representative continued: “We are ready to discuss what we can export. And the second thing [grain] requires further discussion.” As the permanent representative said, Russia has established a safe corridor three nautical miles wide and 80 nautical miles long to ensure the exit of ships with grain, “but they do not leave the port of Odessa.” “We are accused of not letting ships through, but we didn’t set the mines,” — he added.

Guterres also discussed the prospects of resuming fertilizer exports to countries that produce agricultural products with President Vladimir Putin, the discussions were “good and positive,” Nebenzia also said. EU countries restricted the import of Russian fertilizers in April.

On May 16, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, that Guterres offered to ease restrictions on the export of Russian and Belarusian potash fertilizers in exchange for the passage of grain ships from Ukrainian ports; according to the publication, he discussed this issue with Russia and Turkey. The UN World Food Program previously reported that about 25 million tons of grain “stuck” in Ukraine due to infrastructure problems and “blocked Black Sea ports”, including the port in Mariupol, which is under the control of the Russian military.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the issues of the supply of Russian potash fertilizers and the export of Ukrainian grain are being discussed, but “not at the UN level.” On the search for an opportunity to take out the “stuck” Grain was announced by Canada and the USA.

The EC promised to decide the fate of the assets of the Russians under the laws of the EU countries

EU member states will decide on the confiscation of the assets of the Russians, who are currently frozen, based on their criminal law. Brussels intends to determine how to send them to the restoration of Ukraine

Valdis Dombrovskis

The possibility of further confiscation of the assets of Russians in Europe will depend on the criminal law of the state where they are, said the Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis at the press conference.

As Dombrovskis pointed out, the EU should consider “how to use Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine.”

“With regard to private assets, now a special working group of the European Commission is coordinating the work of the countries — EU members to identify the assets of persons under sanctions, to freeze them and to make further decisions on their possible further confiscation. This must be in accordance with the criminal law of the state in which the assets are located,— he said.

Speaking of the assets of the Bank of Russia, Dombrovskis indicated that they are “currently frozen.”

He said that the EU must first “legal due diligence” and then decide on the next steps. On this issue, Brussels will work with partners, including the US and Canada, who are “working in the same direction,” added the deputy head of the European Commission.

Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell advocated the seizure of frozen Russian assets and their transfer to Ukraine. He considered this option “full of logic.”

Bloomberg at the end of April reported that the European Union froze Russian assets worth €35 billion. Among European countries, France is in the lead, which blocked assets worth €23.5 billion, €22.8 billion of which are associated with the Central Bank. Belgium has frozen €10 billion, this is also due to the disconnection of seven Russian banks from SWIFT, the agency specified.

Earlier on May 18, US Treasury Secretary may confiscate the assets of the Russian Central Bank, since this is impossible from a legal point of view. The United States and partners froze the reserves of the Bank of Russia for $300 billion, the US and Russian Treasury Departments reported. “I think, quite naturally <…>, we will turn to Russia to help pay at least part of the cost,” — Yellen said.

In the Kremlin, the possibility of seizing Russian assets in favor of Ukraine was considered “illegal and egregious” and “virtually outright theft.” The head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, noted that the regulator would challenge the freezing of Russian reserves in the courts.

Croatian president urges to prevent Finland and Sweden from joining NATO

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic believes that Zagreb, following Ankara, should prevent Sweden and Finland from joining NATO. The prime minister, who is having a “fierce dispute” with Milanovic, and the Croatian Foreign Minister do not agree with him

Zoran Milanovic

Croatian President Zoran Milanovic believes that his country should follow Turkey's example and try to prevent Sweden and Finland in NATO, reports AP.

According to the agency, Croatian Prime Minister Andrei Plenkovic does not agree with Milanovic; politicians have a “fierce argument” on a number of issues, including whether to support the application of the Scandinavian countries to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to Milanovic, before the Croatian parliament votes on the issue of NATO expansion, Zagreb must achieve changes in the electoral legislation of neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina. The president is pushing for electoral reform that would give Bosnian Croats a better chance at high-ranking positions in that country. He demands that Bosnia and Herzegovina “change the electoral law within the next six months and give Croats their basic rights.”

Plenkovic, reacting to Milanovic's words, suggested its position at the meeting of leaders of the countries— NATO members in the presence of US President Joe Biden, rather than refer the issue to the Croatian Parliament, reports Euractiv. The prime minister said earlier that he had cut off contacts with the president because of the latter's pro-Russian views.

The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO is also supported by Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlich-Radman. At the end of April, during a conversation with his Finnish colleague Pekka Haavisto, the minister said that Zagreb supports the alliance's open door policy and will support Helsinki if an application is submitted.

Russian is taught in ten schools in the city, from September it will be replaced by other subjects, and teachers will be connected to teaching subjects with an “artistic component”. The mayor of Zhytomyr said that there is “no place” for Russians in Ukrainian schools

Starting from the new academic year, schools in Ukrainian Zhytomyr will not teach Russian, said Olga Ermakova, chief specialist of the city's education department, reports « Suspilne».

According to her, while Russian is taught in 40 classes of ten schools, about a thousand students study it. Starting next year, there will be no such subject, and teachers will be able to teach other disciplines, she said.

“Teachers can teach subjects that have an artistic component, so they will be loaded with art subjects, elective courses, connected with the theater, painting, music»,— she explained.

According to her, specific subjects to replace the Russian language will be considered by the teachers' councils of schools, they will be able to be chosen by the parents of the students.

Earlier, the mayor of the Ukrainian Zhytomyr Sergey Sukhomlin said that the Russian language has no place in the Ukrainian school , transmitted the “First Zhytomyr”. He also said that schools would have group or individual consultations “to understand the terminology.” For children who came to the city from the east of the country, language camps will open from June 1.

In mid-April, Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language of Ukraine, said that starting from the new academic year, the country should consider the possibility of replacing the discipline “Russian language” in schools where it is taught, other subjects. Before the end of the year, he proposed to send Russian teachers on idle. Kremin also called for a revision of the program of foreign literature, where great attention is paid to Russian writers.

In September 2017, ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the law “On Education”, according to which, from 2018, schools had to stop classes in any language other than Ukrainian, starting from the fifth grade. From 2020, elementary schools were also supposed to switch to teaching in the state language.

In January 2020, another law was adopted in Ukraine— “On Complete Secondary Education”, fixing three models of learning the state language in schools. The first model concerns indigenous peoples, including the Crimean Tatars, the second applies to schools of national minorities who speak EU languages.

The third concerns the rest of the national communities of Ukraine, this includes the Russian language. In this case, Russian is taught only up to the fifth grade, along with the study of Ukrainian, and by high school the volume of subjects in Ukrainian should increase to 80%.

Russia criticized these laws. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in March that under Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russian language in Ukraine was “finally finished off”; by law. “We will now demand that this be canceled,” — Lavrov said.

Despite the help of Paris to Kyiv, France is not at war with Russia, neither would like to in NATO, not in the European Union, French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Clair Legendre told BFMTV.

“We are not at war with Russia, the EU is not at war with Russia, NATO is not at war with Russia. And we don't want to do that,— Legendre said.

Commenting on Russia's decision to expel 34 French diplomats, she said that Paris condemned the move because it saw “absolutely no reason” for it, and Moscow attributed it to “completely false reasons.”

“A month ago, we ourselves deported people from the Russian embassy who had diplomatic status, but, in our opinion, they acted for purposes contrary to our national security,” — emphasized the representative of the French Foreign Ministry.

At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron will maintain a channel of dialogue with Moscow, Legendre added, explaining what is important for the issue of a ceasefire in Ukraine.

UN Secretary General urged to allow products and fertilizers from Russia to world markets

Guterres called for food from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to be allowed on world markets, saying it was the best way to solve the food crisis. Putin previously blamed the threat of famine on “sanctions obsession”

Russian-made food and fertilizers should be allowed on world markets to solve the food crisis, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the ministerial meeting “Roadmap for Global Food Security” call to action". The broadcast is on the UN website.

According to him, the Russian military operation increased the effect of a number of factors that had been in effect before that, which influenced the food crisis, in particular & mdash; climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, Guterres stressed, are leaders in the production of fertilizers and food.

“Let's be clear, there is no more effective solution to the food crisis without the reintegration of Ukrainian food production, as well as food and fertilizer produced by Russia and Belarus, into world markets,” emphasized the UN Secretary General.

Guterres pointed out that Moscow should stop preventing the export of food from Ukrainian ports. At the same time, fertilizers and food products from Russia should be allowed to the world markets without obstacles, he continued.

“I am in close contact on these issues with the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Turkey, the United States and the European Union, as well as a number of other key countries. I'm sure there's still a long way to go, — said the UN Secretary General.

At the same time, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken denied accusations that sanctions against Russia became the reason for the deterioration in the state of food in the world. He said that Washington made exceptions to the restrictive measures for fertilizers and agricultural products. He added that international organizations and the authorities of various countries can work together to open corridors for the safe export of food from the territory of Ukraine by land and sea.

In early May, the German government announced the threat of famine throughout the world, which will become the strongest since the Second World War. The reasons for this in Berlin were the consequences of the spread of the coronavirus, the drought, and the fighting in Ukraine. “The World Food Program estimates that 300 million people in the world suffer from hunger, and these estimates are constantly being adjusted upwards,” added German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze.

The Russian authorities insist that international sanctions will be to blame for this, such an opinion is shared, in particular, by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev. According to him, the world is waiting for a “full-fledged international food crisis.” and famine in individual countries, a major logistical crisis, new epidemics and other consequences.

The countries of the European Union will also face hunger, which will face “intractable consequences”, Russian President Vladimir Putin is sure. He pointed out that “the continuation of the sanctions obsession” would lead to this, and the poorest countries of the world are already facing hunger.

His representative Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow did not impose restrictions on the export of fertilizers. “We don’t need to remove anything here, the restrictions imposed by the United States, European countries and others must be lifted here,” — he explained. Peskov added that Ukrainian ports are “heavily mined”; and pose a danger to navigation, an operation to clear them is to be carried out.

The US authorities, together with European partners, are working on ways to export wheat and corn from Ukraine in order to further deliveries to global markets, CNN reports, citing sources.

According to the channel, the administration of US President Joe Biden began to work on this issue with European allies after the blockade of the Ukrainian port by the Russian Navy.
